I’m continuing to dose myself with ginger to help fight the cold and flu germs circulating at the moment. So this tasty pineapple and ginger smoothie is a great way to help with the task, as they are both excellent for colds. The pineapple thins congestion and raw honey and ginger’s antiseptic, antibacterial and anti-microbial properties fight the bugs.
The basic recipe is from Ali at GimmeSomeOven. I’ve added the raw honey for it’s powerful benefits and some coconut which makes it really tropical (and because I like it and because of it’s metabolism-boosting effects). Ali comments …
[This] smoothie I made this week happened to be exceptionally tasty … It’s basically a simple pineapple smoothie [with] my favorite smoothie ingredient – fresh ginger! … It is a bright, colorful and nutritious way to start the day.

How much sugar
How much sugar is in this .
What about the sugar content?
Hi Lynne, There are several online recipe analysers, but we’ve not found much consistency between them. One that we use from time to time is: http://www.eatracker.ca/recipe_analyzer.aspx
But note, for most folks, the better questions to ask are “is the sugar natural, unprocessed”? and “what other ingredients are in the recipe?”
This is because, again, for most folks (but check with your doctor) its the rate of absorption of sugars by your body that is much more important than the absolute quantity of sugar in a recipe. And that depends on the other ingredients consumed along with the sugar. (That’s why bananas are classed as “low-glycemic” – GI=51 – even although they can have a relatively high sugar content…)

Who else thinks cooking is cool ?
Pineapple and mangoes are high glycemic index fruits. We use banana but no sugar, ever.
No sugar, soy or oils !!
I keep on a ketogenic diet and am on a liver detox.
Hi Jane, thanks for your comments. You may like to check not only the GI but also the Glycemic Load for various foods http://alsearsmd.com/glycemic-index/ . Pineapple has a slightly higher GI (66), but mango and banana (at 51) are both considered low glycemic. Also, all 3 are at the low end of “moderate” GL – ie taking account of all carb content in a food serving.
So for most folks in good general health, these fruits should be good choices of smoothie ingredients. Of course, each individual should check with their medical professional, if an any doubt…
Looks tasty.

Hi Emily, depends where you live, of course, but you’d need to check with your local stores and possibly farmers’ markets. Otherwise, do a Google search for potential suppliers…
