Blueberries are always a good addition to any smoothie and I’ve been having them more often since I learned blueberries are good for the brain. I’m getting forgetful – too many things competing for attention is my excuse, lol! My local store has frozen blueberries on offer at the moment so I’m heading off to get some more shortly.
Meanwhile here is a tasty and filling recipe from Kristen at SlenderKitchen. Kirsten uses this as a base for varying her smoothies. She says …
I love me a good smoothie and lately I have been loving the addition of oats for some fiber and staying power. I make this smoothie all different ways, usually based on what fruits I have in the house. I like to blend oats, almond milk, and yogurt to make sure I get a good dose of protein as well.

Recipe: Tasty Blueberry Oatmeal Smoothie for Under 250 Calories
Serves 1
Ingredients:
- 1/4 cup / 20 g rolled Oats
- 1/2 cup / 4 oz / 120 ml Water or unsweetened Almond Milk (+15 cals)
- 1/3 cup / 76 g nonfat plain Greek Yogurt (or other yogurt)
- 1 cup / 148 g Blueberries (or other fruit)
- 1 tsp fresh Ginger
Optional:
Increase the nutritional value even more by adding 1 tbs / 7 g ground Flax seeds (+37 cals) OR 1 tbs / 11 g Chia seeds (+53 cals) OR 1 tbs Hemp seeds (+40 cals)
Blend until smooth and enjoy.
Note:
Almond milk is a popular choice for vegans and the ‘health conscious’ as it gives the impression of milk without the fat.
However, while almonds are a good source of protein, almond milk is not a good source of protein, unless you buy fortified almond milk. Select your product carefully as some contain carrageenan which has a bad reputation. While carrageenan is a natural product used to thicken a wide range of foods products, it has no nutritional value and may even be dangerous, causes digestive issues for some people: inflammation, gut irritation, ulcerative colitis and worse.
