[Recipes] My Top 3 Easy After-School Snacks Your Kids (or Grand-kids) Will Go Wild Over

Top 3 Easy After-School Snacks

Fun snacks for those of you with kids (or grand-kids!) – not exactly smoothies, but I came across these super after school snacks – in an article in womansday.com.

I’ve included my favorite 3 right here … but there are 20(!!) creative snack recipes in the source article (see attribution link at the end).

Don’t worry, we won’t tell them how healthy they are!

Sweet and savory, these snack recipes have a little bit of everything.

Recipe 1: Celery Snails & Caterpillars (no.1)

Top 3 Easy After-School Snacks

These adorable snacks take ants on a log to the next level …

Ingredients for the Snails:

  • Celery stalks

  • Peanut butter or cream cheese, at room temperature

  • Sliced apple

  • Sliced orange

  • Sliced kiwi

  • sliced cucumber

  • Sliced tomato

  • Cashews

To Make the Snails:
Fill celery stalks with peanut butter or cream cheese
Top with an apple, orange, kiwi, cucumber or tomato slice shell and a cashew head.
Use peanut butter or cream cheese to glue on candy eyes.

Ingredients for the Caterpillars:

  • Celery stalks

  • Peanut butter or cream cheese, at room temperature

  • Grapes

  • Blueberries

  • Grape tomatoes

  • Candy eyes

  • Celery or radish matchsticks

To Make the Caterpillars:
Fill celery stalks with peanut butter or cream cheese
Top with grapes, blueberries or grape tomatoes for the body and head.
Use peanut butter or cream cheese to glue on candy eyes and celery or radish matchstick for antennae.

Recipe 2: Frozen Banana Snack – Sledding Penguins (no. 13)

These cute little sledding penguins are a fun snack for winter. If your kids like chocolate-covered frozen bananas, they’re sure to like this dressed up version too!

Made with chocolate and Reese’s Pieces, these flightless birds aren’t exactly steeped in nutrients, but they are a healthier alternative to ice cream.

Note: this is probably not a snack that will keep for long. Freeze them for 20 minutes then eat them. They’ll be fine.

I guess you’ll have heard of chocolate covered frozen bananas? So why not craft it up a bit.

Ingredients

  • 1 banana for 2 “penguins”

  • 1/2 cup of chocolate chips

  • Reeces pieces

  • M&M’s

Here are the steps:

  1. Grab some bananas.

  2. 1/2 cup of chocolate chips in a microwavable bowl.

  3. Microwave the chocolate chips for 30 seconds, then stir

  4. Microwave for another 30 seconds.

  5. Cut the bananas so they have a flat bottom

  6. Carefully dip in chocolate until the top and sides have been covered.

Ok so they look a little like Elvis here but stick with me.

  1. Attach Reeces pieces as eyes to the still melty chocolate and half of the orange ones as a beak.

  2. Attach two orange ones as feet – cut M&M’s for the feet in half.

  3. Put the penguins (in tin foil*) in your freezer for about 20 minutes.

Tip: *Spray tin foil with pan spray to make sure they came off easily.

Recipe 3: Peanut Butter Apple Sandwiches (no.20)

Sure to be a hit with kids …

Fruit covered in peanut butter is bound to be a hit in any circumstance, but sandwiching raisins, coconut, and oats in a mound of PB between two apple slices is our idea of perfection!

Channel your inner child and have fun making this kid-friendly snack

They are also adult-friendly too of course (and aren’t we all just big kids at heart?).

Ingredients:

  • peanut butter

  • granola

  • vegan overnight oats

  • chocolate chips (or raisins)

  • coconut

Preparation:

  1. grab an apple,

  2. slice it crosswise

  3. use a large pastry tip to punch a hole through the centre to make an ‘apple bagel’ slice.

  4. Then just layer on peanut butter, granola, vegan overnight oats, coconut, raisins, chocolate chips, etc…anything you desire!

Your kids (grand-kids in our case!) will really have fun making these because they can create their own…
