[RECIPES] – 4 Healthy Smoothie Recipes Your Kids Will Love!

Your kids will love these healthy smoothies from Jodi on modernparentsmessykids.com – a natural foods chef with a fantastic wealth of health food expertise. She’s sharing with us 4 yummy healthy smoothie recipes to try out with your kids. You’ll see the recipes on the following pages ...

There’s lots of excellent info on healthy smoothies for kids – especially about the ingredients. (For example I learned the difference between cacao and cocoa…which had never been clear to me previously.)

There’s also a section on helpful tips & practical guidelines for making smoothies – for example, the best order to do things. Great stuff for your own smoothie recipe ideas. Check out the 4 recipes below and let me know how you like it ...

Healthy smoothie for kids

Here’s Jodi ...

Making smoothies at home is not only really easy, but it is also the best way for you to know that every single ingredient you are adding is natural and healthy (and not a sugary juice from a container). These smoothies are all created from whole, organic (when possible) ingredients. You can also make extra to keep around, saving you time so you don’t always have to break out the blender.

I created these recipes to taste great, but also to sneak in a few super-healthy ingredients that you might not always be able to get the little ones to eat. Each of these four smoothies are great for both mom and kids. Mom will like that they’re healthy and good for you, and kids will like the taste and how fun and colorful they are. Serve them in a colorful glass with a cool, bendy straw and they will be sure to be a huge hit!

Recipe 1: Chocolate Almond Butter

According to Jodi ...

Almond butter has a high amount of protein and helps to lower blood sugar. In other words, drink this and you will feel super satisfied. You can have this for breakfast without feeling hungry until lunchtime.

Ingredients

Chocolate Almond Butter
  • ½ cup of Almond Butter

  • 1 cup of Rice Milk

  • 2 tablespoons of raw Cacao powder

  • 1 ripe Banana

  • 3 tablespoons of Hemp seeds

Recipe 2: Acai Blueberry Chia

Jodi ... I’m sure you are well aware that acai is a celebrated super food. It’s is very high in healthy antioxidants, just like the blueberries that are also in this smoothie

 Acai Blueberry Chia smoothie

Ingredients

  • 1 cup frozen organic Blueberries

  • 1 packed of frozen Acai

  • 1 Greek style Yogurt

  • ½ cup of Rice Milk

Recipe 3: Peach Mango Carrot

Jodi comments ...

Carrots have a light sweetness that blends nicely with the other flavors and add the benefit of a beta carotene boost.

Ingredients

Peach Mango Carrot
  • 1 ripe Mango

  • 1 ripe Peach

  • 1 Carrot

  • 1 cup of Rice Milk

  • 1-2 tablespoons of Flax

Recipe 4: Happy Green Smoothie

Jodi’s perspective ...

Green smoothies are all the rage, and this version is kid friendly so moms can make this for themselves and save the extra for the kids. It is also a great way to sneak in some raw spinach and avocado.

Happy Green Smoothie

Ingredients

  • a handful of Spinach (kale, or any dark leafy green will work)

  • 1 Avocado

  • 1 ripe Banana

  • 1 Apple

  • 1 tablespoon of Flax, Hemp OR Chia seeds

  • a couple of leaves of Cilantro / Parsley (optional)

  • 1 + cups of Water

Dive into the Delicious World of Miso Pumpkin Soup for Fall

Update Discover the Comfort of Miso Pumpkin Soup As the chilly winds of autumn roll in, there’s nothing quite like a warm bowl of soup to comfort the soul. Miso pumpkin soup not only embraces the fall flavors we love but also delivers a hearty dose of nutrition. What if I told you, you could whip this rich, velvety delight in no time, whether you're a busy professional or a student on-the-go? Let's dive into the beauty of this recipe that brings together simplicity and sophistication. The Magic of Miso and Pumpkin Both miso and pumpkin are nutritional powerhouses that bring unique flavors and health benefits to this dish. Miso, a fermented soybean paste, is packed with probiotics, which aid in digestion and boost immunity. Combined with the natural sweetness of pumpkin—which is high in antioxidants, vitamins A, C, and E—you have a soup that not only warms the body but also nurtures it from within. Simple Ingredients for a Stunning Dish The beauty of miso pumpkin soup lies in its straightforward ingredients. Usually, it requires just a few key elements: pumpkin (kabocha or butternut squash), sweet potatoes, garlic, ginger, shallots, and a mellow white or yellow miso paste. Many recipes suggest roasting the pumpkin or squash for rich flavor, as the caramelization enhances its sweetness. Whether you follow the recipe from Food Gawker or the one by Emily Han on The Kitchn, the method is nearly the same—simple yet effective. A Chef's Alternative Insights Different chefs bring their own style to miso pumpkin soup. For example, the Lazy Cat Kitchen's take infuses a hint of lime and optional spices like red chili for a spicy kick. This variation not only caters to diverse taste buds but also reflects the adaptability of the dish, enabling you to personalize it based on what’s available in your pantry. Health Benefits That Warrant Your Attention Including pumpkin in your diet has myriad health benefits: it’s low in calories and high in fiber, which helps with weight control and digestive health. The soup fits well into various dietary preferences, whether you're vegan, gluten-free, or just looking to incorporate more plant-based meals into your lifestyle. Not to mention, it serves as a delicious way to increase vegetable intake, a crucial aspect of maintaining a balanced diet. Easy Steps to Make Miso Pumpkin Soup Preparing miso pumpkin soup is as easy as pie! Start by roasting your pumpkin and sweet potatoes until tender. Sauté the shallots, garlic, and ginger to create a flavorful base, and then combine these elements in a pot with vegetable stock and miso. Blend it all together, garnish with some green onions, and indulge in a bowl of joy! It’s genuinely that simple and can be kept refrigerated for easy lunches throughout the week. Invitation to Explore and Enjoy If you’re intrigued by the wholesome flavors and simplicity of miso pumpkin soup, why not try making it yourself? It’s perfect for family gatherings, casual meals, or even a comforting night in after a long day. Plus, sharing your culinary creations on social media with friends can inspire them to join you in your healthy journey. From classic mixes to unexpected flavors, there’s a whole world of delicious smoothie possibilities just waiting for you to explore. The Power of Creative Combinations Have you ever thought about the magical connections between fruits? Just like a great team, some fruits work better together to boost your health! A study from UC Davis highlights how the combination of ingredients can affect the nutrients your body absorbs. For example, mixing banana in your smoothie has been found to lower the body’s intake of beneficial flavanols, found abundantly in berries. But worry not! This doesn’t mean bananas are bad; it just suggests pairing them wisely with low PPO fruits like pineapples or mangoes to keep those nutrients flowing. Unexpected Blends to Try at Home Let’s take your smoothie game to the next level! Here are some exciting, unexpected fruit combinations to try: Pineapple + Beets + Ginger: This tropical delight isn’t just a feast for your taste buds. Pineapple offers vitamin C and aids digestion, while the beet brings fiber and antioxidants, plus a zing from ginger! Mango + Avocado + Lime: Creamy, tangy, and packed with nutrients! Tips for Smoothie Mastery Every smoothie creator has their tricks! Keep these tips in mind next time you whip up your drink: Balance your ingredients: Mix fruits with leafy greens, protein, and healthy fats for a well-rounded drink. Use frozen fruits: They create a creamy texture and chill your smoothie without needing ice. Supercharge your creation: Adding chia seeds or spirulina can give that extra nutritional boost.
