Your kids will love these healthy smoothies from Jodi on modernparentsmessykids.com – a natural foods chef with a fantastic wealth of health food expertise. She’s sharing with us 4 yummy healthy smoothie recipes to try out with your kids. You’ll see the recipes on the following pages ...

There’s lots of excellent info on healthy smoothies for kids – especially about the ingredients. (For example I learned the difference between cacao and cocoa…which had never been clear to me previously.)

There’s also a section on helpful tips & practical guidelines for making smoothies – for example, the best order to do things. Great stuff for your own smoothie recipe ideas. Check out the 4 recipes below and let me know how you like it ...

Healthy smoothie for kids

Here’s Jodi ...

Making smoothies at home is not only really easy, but it is also the best way for you to know that every single ingredient you are adding is natural and healthy (and not a sugary juice from a container). These smoothies are all created from whole, organic (when possible) ingredients. You can also make extra to keep around, saving you time so you don’t always have to break out the blender.

I created these recipes to taste great, but also to sneak in a few super-healthy ingredients that you might not always be able to get the little ones to eat. Each of these four smoothies are great for both mom and kids. Mom will like that they’re healthy and good for you, and kids will like the taste and how fun and colorful they are. Serve them in a colorful glass with a cool, bendy straw and they will be sure to be a huge hit!

Recipe 1: Chocolate Almond Butter

According to Jodi ...

Almond butter has a high amount of protein and helps to lower blood sugar. In other words, drink this and you will feel super satisfied. You can have this for breakfast without feeling hungry until lunchtime.

Ingredients

Chocolate Almond Butter
  • ½ cup of Almond Butter

  • 1 cup of Rice Milk

  • 2 tablespoons of raw Cacao powder

  • 1 ripe Banana

  • 3 tablespoons of Hemp seeds

Recipe 2: Acai Blueberry Chia

Jodi ... I’m sure you are well aware that acai is a celebrated super food. It’s is very high in healthy antioxidants, just like the blueberries that are also in this smoothie

 Acai Blueberry Chia smoothie

Ingredients

  • 1 cup frozen organic Blueberries

  • 1 packed of frozen Acai

  • 1 Greek style Yogurt

  • ½ cup of Rice Milk

Recipe 3: Peach Mango Carrot

Jodi comments ...

Carrots have a light sweetness that blends nicely with the other flavors and add the benefit of a beta carotene boost.

Ingredients

Peach Mango Carrot
  • 1 ripe Mango

  • 1 ripe Peach

  • 1 Carrot

  • 1 cup of Rice Milk

  • 1-2 tablespoons of Flax

Recipe 4: Happy Green Smoothie

Jodi’s perspective ...

Green smoothies are all the rage, and this version is kid friendly so moms can make this for themselves and save the extra for the kids. It is also a great way to sneak in some raw spinach and avocado.

Happy Green Smoothie

Ingredients

  • a handful of Spinach (kale, or any dark leafy green will work)

  • 1 Avocado

  • 1 ripe Banana

  • 1 Apple

  • 1 tablespoon of Flax, Hemp OR Chia seeds

  • a couple of leaves of Cilantro / Parsley (optional)

  • 1 + cups of Water

Smoothie Blunders and How to Avoid Blender Disasters

Update Beware the Blender: Smoothie Fiascos Await! Creating delicious smoothies can be exciting, but mishaps can occur when we’re too eager to experiment. A curious Redditor recently shared a thrilling tale of a smoothie adventure gone terribly wrong when their blender met a tragic end. I know many of us have been there – blending away, imagining the delightful flavor combinations, only to hear the ominous sound of the motor failing, and in this case, a beloved blender becoming a casualty to creamy dreams. With so many blender-brandishing smoothie enthusiasts at risk, here’s a playful yet informative look into how to make your smoothies bold and delicious while keeping your trusty blender safe. Common Blender Mistakes: What to Avoid Even the most passionate home chefs can make errors that lead to disaster. Here are a few crucial blender mistakes that can ruin even the best smoothie creations: Overfilling: Ignore the max line on your blender, and you might just create a smoothie explosion! Too many ingredients can cause jams and messes, and you might burn out your motor. Treat your blender like a travel mug: keep it under capacity for a smoother ride. Not fitting the lid: An improperly sealed lid can result in an unintended clean-up project. A quick glance around the kitchen will show you why ensuring your lid is locked into place is essential! Blending the wrong ingredients: Some ingredients are simply too tough for standard blenders, especially frozen items without proper preparation. Avoiding the temptation to toss in rock-hard frozen fruits can spare your blender some wear and tear. These are just a few of the mistakes highlighted in a guide on common blender mishaps, which can help you navigate the art of smoothie making with ease. Enhancing Your Smoothie: Tips and Tricks Now that we’ve highlighted the dangers of mishandling your blender let’s energize our smoothie sessions! Here are some handy tips to elevate your smoothie game: Watch Your Liquids: Adding proper liquids is crucial. Go for milk or yogurt instead of water to enhance thickness while still blending smoothly. Use Frozen Fruits: Instead of ice cubes, frozen fruits can give your smoothies a thick, creamy texture without diluting the flavor. Order of Ingredients Matters: Always add liquids first, followed by softer items and finish with harder ones, ensuring blades can create that beautiful vortex that blends perfectly. For those looking to explore even more smoothie-related resources, a detailed guide outlines how to fix common issues, such as watery or gritty smoothies, using simple ingredients and techniques.
