[Recipe] That Fat-Free Dressing is Robbing Your Body of Nutrients

That Fat-Free Dressing is Robbing Your Body of Nutrients

You’ve heard that a spoonful of sugar helps the medicine go down, right? Well, something similar is required to help us absorb Vitamins A, K, E and D from our vegetables and food: ‘a spoonful’ of fat.

I’m not saying, however, we have free rein on deep-fried foods. Unfortunately the ‘spoonful’ is not clearly defined, although it’s thought approximately 6 grams (approx. 1 tsp) of fat may be a good guide.

Reporting a nutritional study, WebMD says …

Eating your salad or carrot sticks with a little fatty salad dressing may actually be better for your health than pouring on the fat-free stuff.

A new study shows that eating fresh vegetables with a little fat, such as oil-based salad dressings or cheese, helps the body absorb valuable nutrients found in vegetables, such as lycopene and beta-carotene, which have been shown to help prevent heart disease and cancer.

In contrast, eating a salad without any fat in it may deprive your body of these healthy nutrients, which are known as carotenoids.

Some nutrients, including vitamins A, K, E and D, and various minerals are fat-soluble which means we need fat for our body to be able to absorb them.

Just another reason to make sure we eat a varied diet.

And everything in moderation.

So perhaps we have license to add a little full-fat sour cream, cream cheese or maybe a little coconut oil to that dip and raw veggies we’re having for lunch, lol! Or in this case, to our smoothie recipe!

We’ve spoken before about including healthy fats in our smoothies. That was to help prevent blood sugar spikes. Well now we have another reason to make sure we include them in our green smoothies.

We have a simple smoothie recipe from Dana the MinimalistBaker that includes some healthy fat to help your body absorb the fat-soluble nutrients it needs.

Recipe: Healthy-Fat Smoothie

Serves 1

Ingredients:

  • 1 medium Banana, frozen

  • 1/2 cup mixed Berries, frozen

  • 1 Tbsp Flaxseed, ground

  • 2 cups fresh Spinach*

Blend until smooth and enjoy.

* Spinach is an excellent source of Vitamins K, A, E – all fat-soluble – C, B1 and B2 as well as many other nutrients.

Mastering Balance After 60: Four Essential Exercises to Stay Strong

Update Unveiling the Balance: Why It Matters After 60 As we age, balance becomes an integral part of our everyday lives. For those over 60, maintaining a strong sense of balance is not just about avoiding falls; it’s about enhancing overall well-being, independence, and confidence in our movements. Every time we dash to grab something that’s just out of reach or maneuver around uneven surfaces, our balance is being tested. Like a captain navigating through choppy waters, our body’s ability to stabilize itself reflects our strength, coordination, and agility. The Importance of Balance Exercises Engaging in balance exercises is vital for individuals over 60. According to healthcare experts, these exercises help reduce the risk of falls—a significant health hazard in older age—while also improving agility and stability. By incorporating simple routines into daily life, like walking along a straight line or standing on one leg, one can profoundly impact their physical capabilities. Such activities not only strengthen muscles but also make daily tasks easier, ultimately boosting quality of life. Four Essential Balance Tests to Try at Home Here are four straightforward balance tests that you can perform at home. They not only assess your balance but also help enhance your overall physical fitness: 1. Single-Leg Stand (Eyes Open to Closed) This exercise helps gauge your coordination while engaging the foundational muscles of your foot and core. Stand tall and lift one foot off the ground for 20-30 seconds. Once you find your balance, close your eyes. This shift in focus increases difficulty and showcases how much you rely on your senses to maintain stability. 2. Stand and Reach Test While standing on one leg, try to reach forward. This challenges your control outside your base and strengthens core muscles. Perform multiple controlled reaches with both arms forward to assess and improve your balance. 3. Split Squat Hold This position shows how well you can stabilize with uneven weight distribution. Lower into a lunge and hold your position. Keep your torso upright while engaging your legs and core. This exercise mirrors movements encountered during daily activities, reinforcing coordination. 4. Single-Leg Reach (RDL Pattern) This movement tests your ability to hinge while staying balanced. By bending at the hips and extending one leg behind, you engage your core, which is essential for maintaining stability. Smooth, controlled movements in this exercise indicate good balance, while also enhancing your body’s stability. Benefits Beyond Balance These balance exercises also deliver unique benefits such as improved muscle strength, enhanced coordination, and even better mood and cognitive function. When your body feels secure in its physical capabilities, it fosters confidence, encouraging you to engage in more activities and enrich your social life. Regular practice not only prepares your body for physical challenges but helps maintain mental agility as well. How to Stay Motivated Staying committed to a balance exercise routine can sometimes be challenging, especially as life gets busy. Create a schedule that incorporates these exercises into your daily routine. Perhaps a quick session while waiting for your morning coffee or during a commercial break can help. Moreover, inviting a friend to join can make the experience enjoyable and interactive. Setting small, achievable goals can also provide the motivation needed to keep going; the key is consistency and gradual progress. Conclusion: Steps Towards a Stronger Tomorrow It’s never too late to enhance your balance and overall fitness. Implementing these exercises can profoundly change how you move through life, fostering independence and confidence. Not only will your body benefit from these routines, but your mind will feel invigorated and ready to embrace challenges. So why not start today? Take ownership of your physical wellness, and enjoy the journey toward better balance and a healthier, more fulfilling life.

Discover Unique Additions to Elevate Your Smoothie Experience

Update Add Exciting New Flavors to Your Smoothies Smoothies can bring a burst of color and flavor to your breakfast routine. They're not just for the health-conscious—they can turn into a delightful experience packed with nutrients and fun! If you're wondering, 'What else can I add to my smoothie?' you’ve landed in the right place. Let's dive into some amazing ingredients that can take your smoothie from good to incredible! Essential Ingredients for a Balanced Smoothie To make a smoothie that’s both tasty and nutritious, start with a solid base of fruits and vegetables. Fruits like ripe bananas, succulent berries, and juicy pineapples not only contribute natural sweetness but also load your smoothie with vitamins. On the veggie side, leafy greens like spinach and kale are perfect—they blend smoothly and remain almost tasteless, allowing the fruits to shine! Protein and Healthy Fats: The Game Changers Adding protein is the key to a filling smoothie. Ingredients like Greek yogurt, peanut butter, or even silken tofu can enhance both the texture and nutritional profile of your drink. And let’s not forget about healthy fats! A splash of almond milk or a spoonful of chia seeds can keep you satisfied for longer. Superfood Add-Ins for Extra Benefits For a healthy boost, consider incorporating superfoods. Ingredients like spirulina, flax seeds, or even a scoop of your favorite nut butter can elevate the nutritional value without compromising flavor. These not only provide essential nutrients but also give an energy boost—perfect for a morning lift! Creative Combinations You’ll Love Mix and match textures and flavors to keep things fresh. For a tropical twist, try combining pineapple, coconut milk, and spinach. Or if you’re feeling adventurous, blend pumpkin puree with nutmeg and vanilla for a seasonal treat! The possibilities are endless, and the best part is you can tailor each smoothie to your taste! A Few Ingredients to Avoid That said, beware of the sneaky ingredients that can derail your smoothie’s health mission. Sugary fruit juices and flavored yogurts can add unnecessary calories and sugars. Instead, stick to whole fruits and opt for unsweetened dairy alternatives to keep your blend healthy. So get creative and experiment with these suggestions. The perfect smoothie is just a blend away! Not only can these ingredients help you meet your dietary goals, but they also let you explore new flavors from the comfort of your kitchen—how fun is that? Discover the Joy of Making Easy Easter Cornflake Cakes This Spring

Update Tasty Twists on a Classic: Easy Easter Cornflake Cakes Easter is a wonderful time for family gatherings, bright decorations, and of course, delightful treats. Among the simplest and most nostalgic Easter desserts to prepare are Cornflake cakes. They don't just evoke memories; they bring the family together in the kitchen for some fun—and they require minimal effort! The Comfort of Nostalgia These Easy Easter Cornflake Cakes offer an inviting blend of nostalgia and creativity. Each bite represents a comforting throwback to childhood, evoking memories of joyous Easter celebrations filled with laughter and candy. They come together from just a handful of ingredients—chocolate, cornflakes, and vibrant chocolate eggs—making them an accessible choice for both novice and experienced bakers. Why Cornflakes? Cornflakes are the perfect foundation for these sweet little nests due to their light, crunchy texture. In the original recipe, it’s suggested to mix melted chocolate with cornflakes before shaping them into nests. This method not only adds sweetness but also a delightful crunch, making each cake irresistible. Their versatility is another reason why they'll be making a cameo in your kitchen this Easter: feel free to experiment by adding nuts, dried fruits, or even switching the chocolate for white chocolate for a lighter touch. Crafting Your Easter Nests To make these festive treats, start with melting your chocolate. Whether you favor dark, milk, or even a splash of white chocolate, just be sure to stir it consistently to achieve that silky-smooth finish. Once the chocolate is ready, fold in your cornflakes to get them nicely coated. For even better presentation, divide the mixture among muffin cups, pressing in the center to create small nests, and fill them with colorful, candy-coated chocolate eggs—ideal for those family members who take their sweet tooth very seriously! Taking it Beyond Cornflakes As the world of cooking evolves, so do the ingredients we use. While the cornflake nests are a classic favorite, similar recipes showcase how adaptable this treat can be. For instance, recipes like Cornflakes Chocolate Nests suggest merely three ingredients—chocolate, cornflakes, and mini eggs—proving that you don’t need complex ingredients to yield great results. If cornflakes aren’t your thing, don’t hesitate to substitute them with puffed rice or granola, as highlighted in several variations. A Wholesome Treat with Minimal Guilt One of the appealing aspects of these cakes is that they're quick to make and don’t carry the guilt associated with more indulgent desserts. Using just a bit of chocolate and cornflakes, these treats can fit into various dietary needs. If you wish to make them a touch more health-conscious, consider reducing the amount of chocolate and incorporating nuts or seeds to enhance the nutritional profile while keeping the crunch. Final Touches Let’s not forget the presentation! Once your cakes set in the refrigerator, consider placing them on decorative plates or wrapping them in cellophane as charming Easter gifts. They can be a delightful addition to Easter baskets or serve as a centerpiece at your festive brunch. Plus, children love the active role they get to play in creating these tasty nests. Join the Celebration The upcoming Easter holiday is a great opportunity to bond with loved ones through the joy of cooking. Whether you choose to stick with the traditional cornflakes or branch out into other cereals, take this time to engage family, unlock creativity, and whip up some delicious Easter cornflake cakes. Let the spirit of Easter inspire you to create memories that will last far beyond the treats themselves. So roll up those sleeves, gather your ingredients, and enjoy creating these delectable treats!
