I do like a little tang to my smoothies. However, don’t forget the honey, maple syrup or whatever sweetening you prefer in this smoothie or you could be stuck with a very sour face if the wind changes, lol!
And I love the thickness the chia seeds add, too. A smoothie has got to be thick, don’t you agree?
Our recipe comes from Natalie at FeastingOnFruit – details at the end of the post as usual. Natalie says …
I recently tried coconut sugar for the first time (I know I’m a bit behind on these alternative sweeteners), and it made me think of bran muffins. Don’t ask how a simple, one-ingredient sweetener can embody an entire bran muffin for me, but it did.

Recipe: Tangy Lemon Chia Smoothie
Serves 2-3
Ingredients:
- 2 Bananas (I used frozen, but fresh will work too)
- 2 cups Almond Milk, or of choice
- 4 Lemons
- 2 tsp Lemon Zest
- 4 tbsp Coconut Sugar
- 4 tbsp Chia Seeds
Blend until smooth and enjoy.
If you are averse to coconut sugar or just don’t have any on hand, then feel free to use whatever sweetener you like, but you may want to start with less since agave and maple syrup are much sweeter than coconut sugar. You’ll definitely need something to balance the tartness of the lemons.
