You’ve done a good job if the kids actually ask you for a smoothie. And even if they say they don’t want the ‘healthy’ bits, there is still plenty you can include that they will enjoy (or not notice, he-he!)
Strawberries and banana make a favorite mix, especially with coconut. However, that’s not what we have here. This time it’s quinoa that’s the secret ingredient. This, along with the chia seeds, adds lots of protein which means this is a very filling smoothie. And if the kids don't like to see the chia seeds in their glass – after all, not many of us like tapioca! – then blitz them for a few seconds in a coffee or spice mill. They will still be effective but not be so visible.
The recipe is from Cathy at the NoblePig who says …
… I have been beefing up [the kids’] smoothies with a few undetected health items. Is that so bad? Oh, I’ll tell them about it one day, but for now they are drinking quinoa and they are loving it.
The reason I love this whole grain is that it is high in protein. It contains all nine essential amino acids … making it a “complete protein”. It’s also full of magnesium and fiber … more good stuff. I also add chia seeds …
Did you know chia seeds are the richest plant source available for Omega-3’s? In fact, they contain more Omega-3 than salmon, a true superfood. I also add wheat germ for B vitamins and more fiber. It seems this healthy trifecta doesn’t make the smoothie taste “healthy”, even though it is. It’s the perfect after-school snack and fills the kids up until dinner is on the table. Much better than sodas or cookies.
Recipe: Secret Ingredient Banana Strawberry Protein Smoothie
Serves 4 cups
Ingredients:
1 large ripe Banana
1 (6 oz) low-fat vanilla Greek Yogurt
1/2 cup cooked Quinoa, cooled
2 Tablespoons Honey, optional, adjust to taste
1 Tablespoon Chia seeds
1 Tablespoon Wheatgerm
2 cups frozen Strawberries (if you have fresh, freeze them first)
1-1/2 cups vanilla almond Milk, your choice
1 cup Ice cubes
Add all the ingredients to your blender and blitz. Serve and enjoy.
Note:
Almond milk is a popular choice for vegans and the ‘health conscious’ as it gives the impression of milk without the fat.
However, while almonds are a good source of protein, almond milk is not a good source of protein, unless you buy fortified almond milk. Select your product carefully as some contain carrageenan which has a bad reputation. While carrageenan is a natural product used to thicken a wide range of foods products, it has no nutritional value and may even be dangerous, causing digestive issues for some people: inflammation, gut irritation, ulcerative colitis and worse.
