Two rather elegant looking smoothies, don’t you think? If you are a smoothie fan you’ll know what is in a regular smoothie. However, you’ll never guess what is in the vanilla layer? The chocolate layer is more obvious, lol!, but I’m going to keep you guessing about that vanilla layer for the moment. Just know that it is categorized as a superfood! OK, I give in … you’ll find the answer in the recipe below.
This recipe comes from Katie at 24CarrotLife who says she cheated, lol …
This is more like a spoonable smoothie, which is the best kind, right? Make this in a food processor (or Vitamix if you are so lucky) to keep this nice and thick. I ended up making twice the recipe so I could fill this huge glass with multiple layers.
Recipe: Secret Ingredient 2-in-1 Vanilla Chocolate Smoothie
Serves 2; 300 cals per serving
Ingredients:
Vanilla Sweet Potato Shake:
1 scoop Vanilla Protein Powder*
1 Banana, frozen
4 tablespoons Sweet Potato puree
1 tablespoon Almond Milk, unsweetened
2 teaspoon Vanilla extract
Chocolate Shake:
1 scoop Chocolate Protein Powder*
2 tablespoon Cocoa powder
1 Banana, frozen
2 teaspoon Almond Butter
3 tablespoons Almond Milk, unsweetened
Blend separately then layer in a tall glass. Enjoy.
* If you prefer NOT to use protein powder then check out our Protein Powders Substitute article.
Note:
Store bought Almond milk is a popular choice for vegans and the ‘health conscious’ as it gives the impression of milk without the fat.
However, while almonds are a good source of protein, almond milk is not a good source of protein, unless you buy fortified almond milk. Select your product carefully as some contain carrageenan which has a bad reputation. While carrageenan is a natural product used to thicken a wide range of foods products, it has no nutritional value and may even be dangerous, causing digestive issues for some people: inflammation, gut irritation, ulcerative colitis and worse.
