We regularly call ‘em green smoothies, but the color varies from bright to dark green with all colors in between … including mud, lol! But don’t let the color put you off! As Kelley at MountainMamaCooks says, you wouldn’t judge a book by it’s cover so don’t judge a smoothie by it’s color. It’s the taste and the goodness in the ingredients that matter. I mean, chocolate is mud colored and we eat it, right?
If you are put off by the color then reduce the quantity of greens you use or vary them with paler colored greens and other veggies that won't give a mud color like carrots, cauliflower, beets, etc. Anyway, getting a rainbow of colored smoothies is particularly good for you.
Here’s what Kelley has to say about her smoothie recipe …
This is definitely on the sweeter side thanks to a ripe banana and half an apple. But it’s balanced nicely with freshly ground almond butter, organic cacao powder and fresh spinach. You could use whatever milk you like but I’m partial to Califia Farms Vanilla Almond milk.
Recipe: Chocolate Banana Almond Smoothie
Serves 1
Ingredients:
1/2 ripe Banana
1/2 small Apple
1 handful of fresh Spinach
1 heaping tablespoon Almond Butter
1 tablespoon organic Cacao powder
1/2 cup Almond Milk
few Ice cubes (optional)
Blend and enjoy.
Note:
Almond milk is a popular choice for vegans and the ‘health conscious’ as it gives the impression of milk without the fat.
However, while almonds are a good source of protein, almond milk is not a good source of protein, unless you buy fortified almond milk. Select your product carefully as some contain carrageenan which has a bad reputation. While carrageenan is a natural product used to thicken a wide range of foods products, it has no nutritional value and may even be dangerous, causing digestive issues for some people: inflammation, gut irritation, ulcerative colitis and worse.
