Dieting will help you lose weight. But not all diets are equal. I was interested to read at WebMD that a diet high in calcium is more effective when wanting to lose weight; even more so, is a diet high in calcium specifically from dairy. (We have a great smoothie recipe to help at the end.)
Dr Michael Zemel, PhD, director of The Nutrition Institute at the University of Tennessee at Knoxville, recommends that you eat three servings of fat-free, or low-fat dairy a day, if you are aiming for weight-loss.
In their studies, Dr Zemel and his colleagues have shown that …
… calcium stored in fat cells plays a crucial role in regulating how fat is processed and stored by the body. The more calcium there is in a fat cell, the more fat the cell will burn — and the greater the weight loss, Zemel says.
He explains that …
Calcium provides small increases in thermogenesis, the body’s core temperature, Zemel explains. This may boost metabolism, which can prompt our bodies to burn fat.
Note this will only help you lose weight as part of a healthy weight reduction plan; otherwise it makes no difference.
