I always love to hear people’s stories. Link that with my interest in smoothies and healthy eating and I’m doubly happy.
Since childhood, Anna at CrunchyCreamySweet has had a history of anemia. She had the blessing of a grandmother who took food lore seriously and helped her beat it with beets – I like saying that, lol! At ten years of age, Anna thought them disgusting. However, as it worked, and she would return to them whenever the anemia returned, which was often in times of stress.
Move on a few years and Anna discovered smoothies. She now regularly actually enjoys her beet smoothies. Read her full story at her website which we’ve linked to at the end.
Meanwhile, here’s what Anna says about the nutritional benefits of beets …
All of my research shows that beets are the answer to my blood problems. They purify the blood, cleanse the liver, lower blood pressure and are proven to reverse hypertension. Beets improve your blood flow, help deliver oxygen to the parts of your body that need it, including the brain. They are the sweet vegetable that is low in calories but high in good carbs and gives you the right kind of energy.
[Beets are also] rich in folate, Vitamin C, Vitamin B, copper, iron, magnesium, manganese, phosphorus and potassium. They replenish iron in your body, which for me is really important. It’s rich in anti-oxidants that help fight cancer and reduce inflammation. I even found out that betaine from beets aids depression and the trytophan relaxes the mind just like chocolate!

Recipe: Anna’s Anemia-Beating Beet Berry Smoothie
Serves 2
Ingredients:
- 1 fresh Beet root, peeled, cut into chunks + 1/2 cup Water OR 1/4 cup Beet Juice
- 6-8 Strawberries, fresh or frozen
- 1 Banana
- 2 Carrots, medium, peeled, in chunks
- more Water, if you prefer a thinner smoothie
To Bump-It-Up to a Make A Meal-Replacement Smoothie add:
- 1/2 cup Oats
- 2 tbsp Sunflower seeds
- 1 Banana OR 4 Dates for extra sweetness
Blend until it reaches your preferred consistency. Enjoy.
If you do not have a high-speed blender and you are averse to ‘bits’ then check out Anna’s website for how to get a smooth smoothie.
NB
Beet greens are incredibly good for you, containing more nutrients than the root itself. So throw some well-washed leaves & stems into the blender with the rest of the fruit and veg.
