Nutritionist Alexa at SimpleRootsWellness gives us her healing smoothie recipe. (See the recipe at the end of the post.) Alexa advises us to make smoothies rather than juice our fruits and vegetables as many of the nutrients are in the pulp and fiber left behind by juicing. These are also the bits that help us feel full and satisfied, not the liquid juice. And don’t forget that sometimes the skin or parts of the fruit closest to the skin contain the most nutrients – I’m thinking especially of citrus, but many others too.
Alexa’s advice is to always include protein and a healthy fat source in your smoothies. She also says …
If you’re not on board with adding the leafy greens, I promise you, you CAN NOT taste them. If you are still wary, try adding half an apple, this really masks the flavor of the greens. Smoothies are an excellent way to add an extra dose of veggies to your diet. If you can’t stand the nasty color it turns sometimes just put it in a dark colored glass. They taste much better than they look.
