I’ve seen various reports that say citrus fruits are a danger to tooth enamel. But I’ve also been told that starting the day with a breakfast orange juice or a hot lemon drink every morning is good for you.
These reports are doubly confusing for me because I had a family member who drank half a lemon in hot water every morning during her very long life and who had her own healthy teeth until the end of her 99 years.
Maybe she just had very strong teeth, but what about the rest of us? Can I do anything to minimise the risk to tooth enamel for my family?
The following comments by Dr Sara Solomon, dentist, were helpful for me, and might help you, too. She says …
Many health and fitness enthusiasts drink hot lemon water upon waking to cleanse the system, stimulate digestive enzymes and possibly even assist with weight loss … The temperature of your hot water does make a difference! Since the rate of chemical reactions increases with temperature, erosion will be more severe at higher temperatures.

6 Pro-tips to Avoid Enamel Damage…
Dr Solomon recommends taking the following steps:
- drink lemon juice diluted with 8 ounces of water
- ensure the water is not too hot
- drink through a straw – but test the temperature first
- rinse you mouth with plain water immediately afterwards, or chew sugar-free gum
- do not brush your teeth for 60 mins
- use a soft toothbrush and brush gently
